Five for Friday: Where I’ve Been

Posted on

Hi guys! Remember me? Sorry for being such a bad blogger lately but life has been crazy. Crazy good that is! So what have I been up to?

1) Running. Lots of running. BF Run #1BF Run #2First Speed Workout Since MarchNational Running Day Run

Sweating Bullets

2) Researching running stuff. I’m trying to keep my run workout routine as fresh as possible going into these next few races. That makes now the perfect time to go through all these issues of Running Time’s that I’ve never made the time to read!

3) Supporting those who support me. My mom just got back into horseback riding after a 5 month hiatus due to shoulder surgery. Wanna know where I get my crazy from? She has been back to riding for 2 weeks, she had ridden this horse 4 total times, and she decided to do a horse show.

Because my mommy is awesome she even got a blue ribbon on her first horse show in a year! She rode in 4 classes and placed: first, second, second, and third. Way to go mommy!

4) Spending time with friends and family.  Memorial Day party at my parents house. Wednesday night trivia with my bro and his girlfriend, and now the rents too. My best friend is coming over this afternoon for some shopping, girl chat, and I’m sure food and wine will be part of that. I’m having a housewarming party tomorrow with some of my closest friends. And, I’ve been spending a lot of time with this guy too:

We met a couple of weeks ago and have been pretty much attached at the hip since. I’m surprised he’s not sick of me yet, after all I am a very special kind of crazy. Winking smile

5) Attempting to re-enter the professional world. As much as I love working as a personal trainer, it is a very difficult field to break into. Many of my clients have discontinued services due to the cost so I am find it increasingly difficult to keep full time hours. So I am going to continue to work with the clients I currently have, work on building up my Runcupcake Fitness business, but also go back to office work for the time being so that I don’t become poor. Winking smile I went on an interview yesterday that sounded like it had really great potential so keep your fingers crossed for me!

That’s my – holy cow I’m not used to wearing clothes like this – look.

What have you guys been up to lately?!

Monday Love: Something Old, Something New…

Posted on

Monday, Monday. I certainly don’t dread Mondays like I used to – perhaps because I now like my job? Couldn’t be… Winking smile

Here’s what I’m up to and loving this week – the Something Old, Something New edition!

1) Finally climbing that rock wall. I’m afraid of heights, and I tried to climb this same rock wall a few years ago. After getting 25% of the way up, I chickened out and quit. Yesterday, I think I made it about 90% of the way. The height scared me a bit, but more my legs were giving out after having just climbed a mountain!

2) Climbing Mt. Washington – take 2. This year my mother and I brought along 3 Mt. Washington newbies – Kevin, my brother, and her friend/horseback riding trainer. We had an amazing time – joking, laughing, eating, playing games… It took us almost 7 hours to climb, given that the first 2 miles were extremely wet due to almost 3 inches of rain that fell on Friday. It is always worth it to get to the top of the highest peak in the Appalachians though!

3) My new job. I worked 16 hours last week, and started my first 40 hour week today. It’s so different from anything I’m used to, so it’s a great challenge. I’m really liking my coworkers, and I’m learning so much from them! I’ve even gotten a few great compliments already. I’m truly looking forward to continuing on this journey of helping people become the fittest they can be.

4) Meeting/seeing blog friends. Rock and Roll Providence Half Marathon is this weekend and I’m so excited to finally meet Charlotte this weekend, as well as seeing Amy, Janine, Dani, and Robin again. I love this little bloggy world and I can’t wait to see/meet these ladies, have dinner in my hometown with them, and then run the streets of Providence together!

5) Six Pack Summer Move of the Week. I forgot to post one last week! My abs are coming along quite nicely – how about yours?! This weeks’ move is a favorite of mine – Flutter Kicks! Do them as many times as you can this week, I’ll be checking in with you later in the week!

What are you loving this week?

Five for Friday: Fabulousness

Posted on

Hello, Friday! Where did you come from? I’m getting better at knowing what day it is, since I’ve put myself on a sort of schedule – working from home, training people, etc…

This has been a fabulous week – I’ll outline it for you, Five for Friday style!

  1. Hearing from a client (on Tuesday) “I really liked yesterday’s workout!” and then again today “I was still sore yesterday from the workout we did on Tuesday.” That means I’m getting the job done! Woot!
  2. Spending a gorgeous summer day at Six Flags with Kevin. We had a BLAST – Running around like a couple of kids, incredibly excited to ride all the giant roller coasters. We rode Bizarro 10 times. 6 times in the front row! It was a perfect fun filled summer day.
  3. Discovering Trader Joe’s for the first time. I was inspired by Kevin’s roommate to finally try Trader Joe’s – so him and I took a trip there on Tuesday afternoon. I was shocked when our bill only came to $45. We bought more than we had the previous week at Whole Foods and spent damn near half as much. Oh, and the garlic chipotle salsa? The jar didn’t make the day…whoops.
  4. My new business ventures! Check out my RunCupcake Fitness page for info on both my Custom Online Training Programs and my Personal Training Services. There are forms to contact me and/or purchase any programs and/or services you may be interested in.
  5. Last, and certainly not least, I GOT THE JOB! On August 6th I start working in the career I want to be in – as a personal trainer at Gold’s Gym. I am so excited to start this next chapter in my life!

Have you had a week as fabulous as I have? I hope you all have an amazing weekend!

Roll with the Punches

I debated writing this post, because I’m not writing it for sympathy, but more to share with all of you that you never know what life is going to hand to you, but 9 times out of 10 what you get is exactly what you needed.

Friday afternoon I got called up into my bosses office and was told the one thing no one wants to hear “Times are tough, we have to make some cutbacks, sorry but we’re going to have to lay you off.”

I was in shock. I had just passed my 7 year anniversary of working there and honestly thought the day I walked out those doors for the last time would be on my terms.

After 48 hours of processing I’ve realized that this couldn’t have come at a better time. I’d been thinking long and hard about how I could get away from that place anyway. I need the extra time to build my business and find clients – extra time that my schedule didn’t allow with a 40 hour per week full time job.

Now I can focus, I mean really focus, on making a name for myself in the fitness industry.

Thoughts I have at this time:

  • I can go back to school for kinesiology or exercise physiology.
  • I have time to create loads of custom training plans for potential clients – I have my very first appointment with my very first paying client tomorrow morning.
  • It’s summer – I’m going to the beach! (Yes, that’s for real – Kevin has the day off tomorrow so we’re going to hit the beach for a bit!)
  • I can run and go to the gym whenever I want.
  • I can work one or two part time jobs until I find a full time job and/or my business really takes off.
  • I can blog whenever I want.

Everything happens for a reason – I truly believe that. This happened for the reasons I listed above – so I can live my life, happily, and chase my dreams without any limits.

I also happen to have a job interview for a trainer position at a gym on Tuesday, which came at the absolute perfect time.

So while I’m still trying to process this – I am of a much sounder mind than I have been for the past couple of days. I spent most of today creating my portfolio and training plans for my mom and my client that I see tomorrow morning.

Having all of my time to do whatever I want until I find another job is what’s going to be really foreign to me – but I think I’m really going to like it!

I hope everyone had an excellent weekend! I ran with Kevin in his first half marathon yesterday – look for a recap tomorrow!

Five for Friday: Fabulousness

It’s seriously already Friday night? I love it! I’m just chilling tonight, relaxing at home with my poochy while the boy is away visiting his family.

I’ve got some great stuff to tell you guys!

1) Teaser: I went to the most amazing event last night! Give and Glam – it’s a girls’ night out to benefit Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Complete with a bar, a fashion show, and a silent auction – plus the opportunity to get all dolled up on a Thursday night! I met so many amazing ladies, and got to spend lots of time with one of my fave run partners, actually not running!

Sam Jess Give & GlamA full write up on this, likely tomorrow!

2) Dinner/drinks post Give & Glam with two people I’ve never met before. I love this blogging world I live in – people are amazing. We sat and ate and talked like we’d known each other for years. Is it a blog thing? Or just a girl thing? Hmmmm….Either way, it was so fabulous to meet Jodi and Melissa and I look forward to seeing them again soon!

3) Another teaser: Another post I need to write. I’m working with a fabulous group of ladies on something called Project 10: Real Women, Real Fitness, where I get to put my brand spanking new NASM Certification to work! (This came in the mail yesterday!). More on that likely this weekend too!

4) I’ve already got some potential clients in the works! I never imagined things would work SO FAST! I am beyond excited to begin working with fitness clients and helping people get into their best physical shape!

5) Kicking ass and taking names is the game when it comes to my new job. I am on 10,000,000 all. day. long. But, I love it – not the job, but the high paced environment because it means I get the bill paying work out of the way faster so I can get home to work on what will be the future bill paying (and fulfilling!) work! I am seriously beyond busy in this new job – it’s a very fast paced, detail oriented, demanding position, which totally fits me. So far so good while I continue to work here to make my life the exact way I want it to be.

Life has really taken a turn toward amazing for me in the past 3 weeks and I couldn’t be happier right now.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

I Have a Dilemma

Posted on

Remember all of that job related stuff I told you about the other day? The stuff that sounded like it had great potential and was exciting?

I’m not in the least bit excited about it – I mean not. at. all. I was excited for about the rest of Wednesday, and by Thursday when I started to really think about what this change would entail, my excitement soon changed to worry, dread, confusion. I’m taking this as a sign, only I don’t really know what to do about it. Always trust your gut, right?

I’ve been doing this same type of work since I was 19 and I’m good at it. It’s not my dream job (that would be personal trainer/running coach/possible nutritionist too – it took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up, but now that I know I’m not letting that dream slip away), but it pays the bills and I know how to get it done.

Right now, I’m responsible for no one but me, and I report directly to the owner of the company.  This new position would change my direct report to a coworker that I consider an “equal”.  I’m unsure of how this direct report change would affect our working relationship, which right now is that of friendly coworkers who chit chat about our family and pets, and occasionally eat lunch together.

The boss’s son (who is pretty much the current boss, since the big boss is on extended vaca {early retirement} in Florida) thinks I’m unhappy in this position because I’m not being challenged, mostly because I haven’t shared my future plans with him. Most of my coworkers don’t know what I plan on doing with my life, because I tend to keep to myself with personal matters.

It’s time for me to move on down the road, follow my dreams, and live my passion.

But until I actually have a new job, how do I handle that here? I’d like to be able to maintain my current position while I search for a new job, but I don’t know how to tell my boss that I do not want the promotion.

Hence, my dilemma.

What would you do?
